The Boston Red Sox, or who should be known as the Red Stockings, have been playing in the MLB since 1901 and have some of the most diehard fans in any professional sport. Originally, the team played as just “Boston,” with some historians insisting on the “Pilgrims” being the original team name. The “Sox” nickname didn’t come around until 1908 when the team began to wear their trademark red stockings. The “Sox” term came from a Chicago newspaper headline in reference to the Chicago White Stockings, however, when “stockings” were too large to fit on the front page, the newspaper used “Sox.” Ever since then the Boston Red Sox decided to jump on the band wagon and steal another city and team’s simple, yet great idea and coin it as their own - typical Bostonian style.
But, of course, anyone who has ever put on a baseball glove knows, the Boston Red Sox are best known for the acquisition, sale and curse of Babe Ruth. Ruth had played for the Red Sox for 6 years prior to being sold to the team’s greatest rival (even today) the New York Yankees in 1919. The best and most laughable part of all this is that the purpose behind the team’s sale of Ruth was so that owner, Frazee, could finance the production of his Broadway paly No, No, Nanette.
