The White Sox, the poor south side companion of the Chicago Cubs, have almost just as much team history as their big brother. The team began playing in Chicago, in 1900 and were known as the “White Stockings” in those days. The team changed their names officially to the White Sox in 1903 after a newspaper article headline cut down the length of the teams name in order to fit on the front page. When the new nickname caught on team owners decided to make the change permanent. In fact, the term “sox” became so popular that the name spread to Boston, where the Red Stockings also changed their name to the “Red Sox.” Along with team name changes, the White Sox has also seen a more recent facelift and name change to their home. Formerly known as Comiskey Park, the White Sox upgraded their old stadium in 1991 and renamed the stadium New Comiskey Parky – however, the club was in desperate need of financial support sold the stadium rights to U.S. Cellular, who then renamed the arena to U.S. Cellular Field.
