The Motor City Tigers, D-town’s own MLB franchise is one of the American League’s 8 charter franchises started at the turn of the last century. Most famously playing out of Tiger’s Stadium from the 60’s til 2000, the Tigers today play their home games at Comerica Park. One of the oldest controversies surrounding the Detroit Tigers to this day concerns the origin(s) of the team’s name/symbol/mascot – the Tiger. Detroit’s former professional baseball team was the Wolverines, who were the source for the University of Michigan’s mascot today. However, in 1901, with the team’s opening game, they remained nameless. However, following that game several sources all declared the team the Tigers. George Stallings, one time owner claims responsibility for the naming, however, the name was in use prior to his ownership. Others claim that the name came from the team’s unique orange and black stockings. Most say that the originator was local sportswriter dubbed the team’s opening day play as ferocious, just like his alma mater’s baseball team – the Princeton Tigers.
