The Minnesota Twins – obviously named after the two neighboring cities that the team calls home, Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Once, the team’s caps and logo portrayed two baseball players, one from the former Minneapolis Millers and the other from the St. Paul Saints, with the two shaking hands over the Mississippi River. Today the team plays at Target Field, newly constructed in April 2010. Prior to establishing themselves in Minnesota, the Twins weren’t the Twins and were located in Washington D.C. It wasn’t until owner, Calvin Griffith, requested that, in 1960, he be allowed to move his team to Minnesota and let the MLB’s new expansion team take up residence in their stead in Washington.
While the Twins are a competitive and successful ball club, the team faced relocation rumors during the late 90’s/early 00’s. The team’s home stadium, Humphrey Metrodome, was extremely outdated and in need of repair. Also, there was a great deal of debate amongst the league as to the fairness of the stadium due to its turf floor and white roof – both of which was said to give the Twins a stark home field advantage and cause for both its 1987 and 1991 World Series titles. To put an end to these rumors, the Twins finally opened their new facility in 2010.
