Not exactly the most successful of baseball teams, the Tampa Bay Rays usually finish in last place rather than any place else. The Rays are one of the newer squads to join the MLB, having their foundation back in 1998. The team has always called Tropicana Field home, located in St. Petersburg, Florida. Due to the team’s lack of success on and off the field necessary changes were made in 2008 by team owner Stuart Sternberg, the team went from being known as the “Devil Rays” to just the “Rays.” The change to “Rays” was supposed to indicate a beacon of light that spread across the state of Florida . Along with the name change, the team also had to replace their symbol from a devil ray, to a ray of sunlight. The original devil rays symbol can still be seen on the sleeve of the team’s jerseys. While Tampa may have its major baseball team presently, who knows what the future has in store for the franchise and the Tampa Bay area.
