Formerly known as the Montreal Expos, the Washington Nationals moved from Canada in 2005. The Nationals got their start due to a contraction in 2001. In a 28-2 team owner vote, the MLB had decided to reduce the size of the league by downsizing two teams. However, in a legal turn of events, the Metrodome operators (home of the Minnesota Twins) were granted an injunction that in effect made it impossible for MLB to continue with their downsizing plans. Instead, the MLB wanted to relocate the Expos in order to make the team more profitable. In the end the league decided that Washington D.C. was the most suitable location for a new MLB team. The Nationals move to Washington was a rebirth of baseball to the city. Washington was the former host to the American League Washington Senators. The Nationals began playing their home games at RFK Memorial Stadium until 2008 when the team began playing at their new arena, Nationals Park.
