The Knickerbockers, yes for all of you who didn’t know, the New York Knicks’ true name is the New York Knickerbockers. So for the rest of you who aren’t quite what a knickerbocker is, it comes from the pseudonym from a book by Washington Irving, A History of New York. The term is a reference to the descendants of the original Dutch settlers of today’s New York City. The Knicks of old and the Knicks of today are not quite the same, unfortunately. The Knicks began with franchise success, being a dominate force in the NBA and a steady title contender. However, today, in what New Yorkers begrudgingly refer to as the post-Ewing era – the team has plummeted into mediocrity. The one thing that the team has been consistent about is the their home area – Madison Square Garden. The Garden is one of the most prestigious home arenas in all of sports and has been home of the Knickers since 1968.
