The Baltimore Ravens had their beginnings as an expansion of Art Modell’s Cleveland Browns. After several legal actions, the dispute was resolved with Modell moving his entire staff and team to Baltimore with his new franchise, first appearing in the 1996 NFL season. The team’s mascot is a homage to the famous Baltimore poet Edgar Allen Poe, and refers to one of Poe’s most famous poems, “The Raven.” The Raven’s attended and won Super Bowl XXXV against NFC contender, the New York Giants with a final score of 34-7. The Ravens became the third wild card team to win the Super Bowl and the first NFL team created after the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to appear and win a Super Bowl. The city of Baltimore hadn’t had a prior Super Bowl titled since the Baltimore Colts won 30 years earlier. The Ravens were led by Defensive Captain and Super Bowl MVP Ray Lewis; making himself the second ever linebacker to win the Super Bowl MVP award.
