Based out of Cleveland, Ohio the Cleveland Browns are a member of the North Division of the American Football Conference in the National Football League. The team had its beginnings in 1946, playing its games in Cleveland Municipal Stadium, as one of the original teams of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and subsequently joining the National Football Conference (NFL) in 1950 when the NFL merged with the AAFC. The Cleveland Browns are only one of three AAFC teams to survive the merger with the NFL. After nearly 50 years of football pride and tradition in the Cleveland area, owner Art Modell wanted to move the team to Baltimore, Maryland in 1995. With this announcement came huge public outrage and eventually led to legal action. The resulting compromise was that Modell would be allowed to take his staff and all currents players with him to Baltimore, where he formed today’s Baltimore Ravens. The Cleveland Browns took an official “hiatus” for a three-year period and resumed NFL play in 1999, keeping the team’s history and traditions. Today the Browns play their home games in Cleveland Browns Stadium in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.
