Located out of San Diego, California, the Chargers are a member of the Western Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League. The Chargers were founded in 1960 as a member of the American Football League and were homed out of Los Angeles, California. The club then moved to San Diego the follow year, in 1961, where they play their home games today in Qualcomm Stadium. Before joining the NFL in the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, the Chargers had made it to the AFL Championship four times. Since joining the NFL the Chargers have also had an impressive record, making ten playoffs appearances and four appearances in the AFC Championship. The Chargers also have six players and one coach in the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Lance Alworth, Fred Dean, Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Ron Mix, Kellen Winslow, and coach Sid Gillman. Gillman’s tenure as head coach of the Chargers was short-lived after the 1970 merger. The coach left the team after the 1971 season, leaving the team to start a new era in the NFL with very few of its original players and coaching staff from the AFL.
