The Buffalo Sabres are members of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Honkey League. The Sabres are one of the few remaining teams in the NHL who have not won the Stanley Cup. The team was founded in 1970 by the Knox family. The Knoxes wanted to change the current team name from the Buffalo Bison to a new name – the Knoxes eventually settled on the Sabres. The Knox family owned the team until the 1997-98 season. The team had seen losses in excess of million over the previous three seasons, which led them to sell the team to John Rigas. Also, in 2000 the team unveiled the third team uniforms, going away from the classic Bison head, the team went for a new look with two crossing sabres. However, in 2002 nothing would help save owner John Rigas and his sons from charges of securities fraud and embezzlement of more than billion. The Rigas family was convicted and sentenced to fifteen years in imprisonment. The NHL immediately took over the management of the club, allowing the Rigas family to remain as owner strictly on paper.
