The Carolina Hurricanes, originally known as the New England Whalers and then the Hartford Whalers, is a member of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. The team is located out of Raleigh, North Carolina, making it the city’s only professional sports team and play their home games at the RBC Center. Established in 1971 as a part of the World Hockey Association, the team joined the NHL with their moving to Hartford. They wouldn’t be known as the Hurricanes until they moved to North Carolina in 1997. The team moved to North Carolina after being unable to negotiate a construction and lease agreement for a new stadium in the Hartford area. However, due to the quickness of the team’s move they were forced to play their first two seasons as the Hurricanes ninety minutes away from Raleigh in Greensboro, North Carolina at Greensboro Coliseum. The team has one Stanley Cup title from the 2005-06 season defeating the Edmonton Oilers and has two Conference Championships in 2001-02 and 2005-06 seasons.
