Based out of Columbus, Ohio, the Columbus Blue Jackets are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded in 2000. Prior to the Blue Jackets, Columbus was home to the Columbus Chill. The Chill were an ECHL team. Prior to the Chill, Ohio was home to the Cleveland Barons, the state’s only other NHL team up to 1978. The Blue Jackets play their home games at Nationwide Arena. In 1997 Columbus placed a bid with the NHL with numerous other cities for the possibility to be the new NHL expansion team. It is believed that when Nationwide announced they would be financing a 0 million arena project in Columbus, Ohio it tipped the scales in Columbus’ favor to become the newest member of the NHL. The team chose its name in a homage to the “patriotism, pride and the rich Civil War history in the state of Ohio and the city of Columbus.” This reference is the state responding to President Abraham Lincoln’s request for ten regiments during the Civil War, the state went that much further when it provided the Union with twenty-three regiments.
