The Edmonton Oilers, located out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, are members of the Northwest Division in the Western Conference of the National Hockey League. The Oilers play all their home games at Rexall Place. Formerly known as the Alberta Oilers, playing in the World Hockey Association, the Oilers were established in 1972. The Oilers left the WHA in 1979 when the joined the NHL in a four franchise expansion of the league. After joining the NHL the Oilers excelled and won five Stanley Cup Titles in the 1980’s. This string of success has earned the teams of this era “dynasty” status from the Hockey Hall of Fame. At the end of the team’s “dynasty” era, they made a sudden trade with the Los Angeles Kings that ended with the team letting go of the team leader and superstar, Wayne Gretzky. Team owner, Pocklington, claims that he had tried to renegotiate Gretzky’s contract prior to him becoming an available free agent in the 1989-90 season. However, Gretzky did not want to give up his option for relocation and in an attempt to gain some value for Gretzky Pocklington decided to trade the NHL great.
