Located in Sunrise, Florida, (Miami metropolitan area) the Florida Panthers are members of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. The team was established in 1993 and have been consistently been one of the worst teams in the NHL year in and year out. The team franchise was sold to H. Wayne Huizenga, who owned Blockbuster Video at the time. Huizenga began to build his team by hiring the present time Detroit Red Wings coach, Bryan Murray as his GM. The team originally played its home games at Miami Arena. However, the team now plays its home games at BankAtlantic Center. Some hockey lovers claim that the team’s poor performance is due to the fact that they are geographically the southernmost located NHL hockey team. The team has only made the playoffs three times, resulting in only one Stanley Cup appearance that ended in a loss to the Colorado Avalanche.
