Known as both the Montreal Canadiens and Les Canadiens de Montreal, they are members of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. The Canadiens are located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and play their home games at the Bell Centre. The team goes by several French nicknames, including: le Club de hockeyCanadien, Les Canadiens, Le Bleu-Blanc-Rouge, La Sainte-FLanelle, Le Tricolore, Les Glorieux, Les Habitants, and Le Grand Club. All of these French nicknames loosely translated mean “The Habitants.” The club’s history dates back to 1909, which predates the formation of the NHL itself, making it not only the oldest team in the NHL but the oldest professional sports franchise in all of North America. Not only the oldest team in the NHL, but the best decorated as well. The Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup title more than any other franchise, claiming twenty-four titles, twenty-two of these titles came after the 1927 NHL isolation of the Stanley Cup.
