Another professional California hockey team, the San Joe Sharks, are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League. The team was founded prior to the start of the 1991-92 NHL season. The Sharks were not the first professional hockey team to play in the Bay Area. The California Golden Seals were a NHL team in the area from 1967 to 1976 until they moved to Cleveland, Ohio. It was former Seals owners, George and Gordon Gund who brought the NHL back to the area, but as the new franchise owners of the Sharks. In order to do so the Gunds had to first sell all of their shares as owners of the Minnesota North Stars, who had been purchased by the brothers after moving to Cleveland. Opting to not rebirth the “Seals” name, the Gunds bid the public to offer and vote upon what should be the team’s new name and image. The winning vote was for the “Blades,” however, the Gunds felt that this could be associated with a too violent image and instead chose the runner-up, the “Sharks.”
