Based out of Washington D.C., the Washington Capitals are members of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. Also referred to as the “Caps,” the team has made it to the Stanley Cup Finals only once, in 1998. The Capitals were founded in 1974 and joined the NHL for the 1974-75 season as a part of an expansion that included the Kansas City Scouts. The team was owned by Abe Polin, who also owned the professional basketball team, the Washington Bullets. Polin wanted to see both of his teams under the same roof, so in 1975 he built the Capital Center and moved the Bullets out of Baltimore and into the D.C. area. Today the team plays its home games at the Verizon Center. The team’s first year in the NHL was poor by anyone’s standards, the team finished 8-67-5 with only scoring twenty-one points the entire season. To this day, the team’s first eight wins are the fewest of any NHL team to play a seventy game regular season.
